The apartment is one side of a two-family house, so we have an upstairs, a downstairs, and our own basement with our own washer and dryer and plenty of space for storage. The first floor of our apartment includes the living room, the kitchen, a half bathroom, and a small bedroom. On the second floor we have a full bathroom and two larger bedrooms.
The available room is the smallest one (first floor), which is why the price is so low. It would fit a twin-sized bed best, although previously people have used a queen, but with other furniture, that doesn't leave much space to walk around. (We have a twin-sized mattress available as well if you'd like to use it.) The room is carpeted and has a window with a view of a park which is directly behind our house.
The current occupant moved out a couple weeks ago, so the room is ready to move into whenever you are. The lease runs through the end of August 2012, but is flexible if you want to stay later or leave earlier (as long as you can find someone to replace you). There are 10 windows in the combined kitchen / dining area, and so it is very bright and cheery.
Other than the kitchen and bath, the main floor has all the original hard wood floors. While the upstairs is radiator-heated, the gas furnace is new (< 3 years old) and highly efficient. The radiators on the main floor are hidden by custom-built wooden boxes that double as benches and/or bookcases. The house is split into two separate heating zones, so you can have control over the temperature of your area of the house.
Also on the main floor is a door leading to "your" suite. This private area includes two bedrooms, one with a walk-in closet, and full bath (with linen closet) between them. Currently set up as a bedroom (with king sized bed) and an office (includes wiring for cable and high speed Fios internet), both rooms have two windows each and hard wood floors. The owners don't mind if you want to paint your suite, but ask you to approve the colors with them, first. There is little to no sound spillover from the downstairs living space.
The bottom floor of the house is a walk-out lower level, where I will reside. It includes an attached garage for storage (not accessible for a vehicle), my bedroom, a surround-sound media room, and a full bath with washer/dryer. My intent is to 'split' the house so that the downstairs is my area of the property, but of course I would be happy to share access to the laundry facilities.
The back yard includes a large, "trex" style deck off the kitchen, with a gigantic gas grill that is tied into the house gas line (no need for propane tank refills).
For additional storage there is a full attic with new pull-down stairs accessible from the kitchen.
Well-behaved pets are negotiable.
Details about the property and location
The house is situated on a small but nicely landscaped lot. There is a hedge and perennial garden at the front of the house, and a long driveway with tandem parking for 4+ cars. The deck overlooks the back yard, which includes a recently re-leveled bluestone patio ringed by a stone garden with more perennials, a dwarf nectarine tree (not producing yet) and a mulberry tree (lots of edible berries in early summer!). The yard also includes a small grassy area.
There are nice neighbors close by to the left and right of the house, but beyond the back yard is green space (with a beautiful mature tree) belonging to two other neighbors at a lower elevation. So, no backyard neighbors to look at while you relax on the deck or the patio.
The property sits in a quiet neighborhood on the border of Arlington and Winchester, at the top of Turkey Hill in Arlington Heights. Across the street is Turkey Hill reservation with over a mile (maybe more?) of woodland trails with great views over the valley and towards the city.
The house is on a reliable bus route to Alewife station (#67). The current owner commutes to Kendall square on the T in only 40 minutes. It is a 15 minute walk to Mass Ave, where several other bus lines run often, late at night, and on the weekend. The location is also an easy drive up to the 128 corridor, either up Rt 3 or Rt 2. It is possible to live here without a car, but for those with transportation there is plenty of off-street parking.
The owners of the house did a lot of work on the property with the idea that they would be living there long-term. They have entrusted me to live in and take care of things, and they do live nearby. They are extremely responsive when and if issues arise.
